OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its AI assistant designed to support learning while applying stronger protections for younger users by default. Announced on August 18, 2026, the experience is intended to help teenagers understand difficult material, think critically and use AI with greater confidence without positioning the system as a substitute for independent work, educators or real-world relationships.

Users are automatically placed into the teen experience when OpenAI’s system estimates that they are under 18 or when they report an age between 13 and 17. Built to support learning

ChatGPT for Teens is primarily positioned as a learning aid for times outside the classroom when direct help may not be available. The idea grew from volunteer work with a local search-and-rescue organization.
